RNID

RNID introductory web pages state that the "RNID is the largest charity representing the 9 million deaf and hard of hearing people in the UK. As a membership charity, we aim to achieve a radically better quality of life for deaf and hard of hearing people."  Link to the RNID here.

RNIB

RNIB introduce themselves on their web pages in the following way "We are UK’s leading charity offering information, support and advice to over two million people with sight problems.  Our pioneering work helps anyone with a sight problem – not just with braille, Talking Books and computer training, but with imaginative and practical solutions to everyday challenges."  Link to the RNIB here.

Reading Sight

The welcome on their web sites says "Reading Sight has been created to support librarians, teachers, voluntary workers and anyone interested in helping people with sight loss get access to reading and reading services". To access the Reading Site Home page follow this link.

EHRC - Equality and Human Rights Commission

Their web pages state "Our job is to promote human rights and create a fairer Britain. We do this by providing advice and guidance, working to implement an effective legislative framework and raising awareness of your rights". Link to the EHRC here.

DRC - Disability Rights Commission

The DRC web site closed on the 28th September 2007.  The new Commission is the EHRC (see the link above).  Their web pages explained "The Disability Rights Commission (DRC) is an independent body established in April 2000 by Act of Parliament to stop discrimination and promote equality of opportunity for disabled people.", and "Our goal: a society where all disabled people can participate fully as equal citizens."

Skill

Skill is the National Bureau for Students With Disabilities. Skill is a national charity promoting opportunities for young people and adults with any kind of disability in post-16 education, training and employment across the UK. Link to Skill here.

TechDis

The TechDis web site explains "The JISC TechDis service aims to improve provision for disabled staff and students in the further, higher and specialist education sectors through technology. Achieving this takes several routes. TechDis provides an advice and information resource via extensive web-based databases and an email helpdesk. These resources should be the first port of call for anyone in education who has a question relating to disability and technology." Link to TechDis here.

Revealweb

The Revealweb site catalogue provides details of the range of 100,000 titles of accessible resources that are available in alternate formats such as Braille, moon, audio, digital talking books and large print.  In addition the site provides information about all the suppliers who produce, sell or loan this accessible media, and the terms under which they are made available.  Link to Revealweb here.

BDA

On The British Dyslexia Association web site they express their vision as "a dyslexia friendly society that will enable all dyslexic people to reach their potential" and state "The BDA is the voice of dyslexic people. We aim to influence government and other institutions to promote a dyslexia friendly society. TheBDA promotes early identification and support in schools to ensure opportunity to learn for dyslexic learners.  We want to represent the needs of dyslexic people on leaving school, in higher education and in work".  Link to the BDA here.

NSE

The National Society for Epilepsy introductory web pages explain "The National Society for Epilepsy is committed to providing information and support to people with epilepsy. We also provide care for people with epilepsy through medical and residential services."  Link to the NSE here.

DiabetesUK

According to their web site "Diabetes UK is the leading charity working for people with diabetes. We fund research, campaign and help people to live with the condition. Our mission is to improve the lives of people with diabetes and to work towards a future without diabetes."  The Diabetes UK site has been translated into Bengali, Chinese, Gujarati, Hindi, Punjabi, Urdu and Welsh.  Link to Diabetes UK here.

CancerBACUP

CancerBACUP's mission is to give cancer patients and their families the up-to-date information, practical advice and support they need to reduce the fear and uncertainty of cancer. CancerBACUP is Europe's leading cancer information service, with over 4,500 pages of up-to-date cancer information, practical advice and support for cancer patients, their families and carers. CancerBACUP has a lot of information about teenage cancers, just type in the search term teenage and follow the links. Link to CancerBACUP here.  There is a website for teenagers with cancer which is called Teenage Cancer Trust.

Government Disability Information

Staff may be interested in the government web site managed by the Disability Unit in the UK Department for Work and Pensions.  The Department of Work and Pensions is responsible for the Government's welfare reform agenda.  Link to disability.gov.uk here.  For information about disability benefits link to the Department of Work and Pensions here.   You may also be interested in the information supplied by another major public worksite called Directgov, where you will find a section for disabled people and unpaid carers covering topics such as independent living, health, employment and education.

The Shaw Trust Cymru

Staff with disabilities are encouraged to take a look at the Shaw Trust Cymru site which offers a range of opportunities for organisations, one of which is to ensure the best provision for disabled people by working in partnership with Local Authorities, Social Services and Health Trusts. Disability Wales

The Disability Wales web site describes themselves as "...an independent, not for profit organisation established in 1972. We are a membership organisation of disability groups and allies from across Wales.
